Dear Melican Families -
It is hard to believe that the second quarter ends Friday, January 23. Teachers are working hard with students to help them complete work and meet learning standards.
Please help students remember to charge their chromebooks each night and to keep their Yondr pouches in their backpacks.
We have one home basketball game next week on Tuesday. As a reminder, students who wish to watch the game, must go home and then return for the game.
We also have Jazz Night at Melican on Wednesday, with jazz workshops during the day for students in our Stage Band and Jazz Band.
Enjoy the long weekend.
Please reach out with any questions.
Respectfully,
Michelle T. Karb, Principal
Gretchen M. Bean, Assistant Principal

School Attendance Caregiver Workshop
Join Family Success Partnership (FSP) for a district-wide parent workshop focused on empowering families and strengthening students’ connection to school. This will include practical strategies, communication tools, and community resources to help students develop consistent and confident school attendance. We’ll explore supportive approaches and collaborate on ways to help every student feel engaged and ready to attend. All parents and caregivers are welcome!
The Family Success Partnership (FSP) is a school-based wraparound program that collaborates with districts to connect their students and families with a range of essential services, both during and outside the school day. FSP clinicians support families in overcoming systemic barriers and access to services through clinical assessment, direct referral support, application assistance, therapeutic intervention, and parent psychoeducation that lead to family empowerment, student success and access to sustainable resources in their community.
Date: January 28, 2026
Time: 9:30 am-11:00 am
Location: Northborough Public Library Community Room

Nursing Corner
Hello All,
The health office wanted to make parents aware that the district has seen an increase in the number of confirmed flu and influenza-like illnesses in the past week. Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs.
We recommend closely monitoring for symptoms. Symptoms usually appear 2-3 days after exposure. If symptomatic, please stay home and contact the school nurse. Flu signs and symptoms usually come on suddenly. If you have concerns about any symptoms or if there are any underlying chronic health conditions, please immediately contact your health care provider.
People who are sick with flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:
Fever*/feeling feverish or chills
Cough
Sore throat
Runny or stuffy nose
Muscle or body aches
Headaches
Fatigue (tiredness)
Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.
**It’s important to note that not everyone with the flu will have a fever.
Please continue to inform the school nurse of any flu diagnosis (or any other respiratory illness) and please follow our District Illness Guidelines for return to school criteria.
After having the flu or influenza-like illness, to return to school both the following must be true: fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication AND the stamina to participate in an entire school day.
Please continue to promote good hygiene and healthy habits.
Good hygiene: Encourage regular handwashing, cough/sneeze into your arm, and avoid touching your face/mouth especially during cold and flu season, to reduce the spread of germs.
Healthy habits: Make sure to get enough rest, eat a balanced diet, and stay hydrated to strengthen your immune system.
